Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the information provided during CPS-3 enrollment confidential?
A: Confidentiality is of the utmost importance to us and we will make every effort to protect the privacy of study participants. We have multiple procedures in place to safeguard the personal information we collect. We will label your data with a unique identification number when it is collected; store your blood sample, survey data, and other study materials separately from all personal identifying information (like your name, address, and social security number); limit access to any identifying information to authorized study personnel only; have all staff sign confidentiality forms and undergo training in research ethics; have all Volunteers sign confidentiality forms.

Q: Who makes sure this study is safe and scientifically sound?
A: There will be ongoing external review of CPS-3 by cancer researchers from many prominent university and research institutions. Review and oversight by the Emory University IRB (Institutional Review Board) continues annually throughout the study. When a study has completed active enrollment, the IRB continues to provide oversight while investigators analyze questionnaire and biological data.

Q: Who will coordinate staff for blood collection?
A: Quest Diagnostics, Inc. has been contracted nationally by the American Cancer Society to provide phlebotomy staff at all CPS-3 enrollment locations, provide courier transport of blood specimens, and process all blood samples at regional facilities. Coordination of Quest Diagnostics staff will be done by Epidemiology Research staff.

Q: Why would I want to participate in this study?
A: Most people who participate in research studies hope they will contribute to a better understanding of how to prevent disease. For CPS-3, this knowledge will help reduce the burden of cancer for this and future generations. Participation will help us reach a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
